No, anti-immigration activists don’t trust Mitt Romney

Via:, Wonk Blog

Forget the White House.

Protesters in front of the U.S. Supreme Court (Mark Wilson – GETTY IMAGES)For activists who want to stamp out illegal immigration, the presidency is rather besides the point, at least while Mitt Romney is the nominee.“I could write in my mother’s name. I really wouldn’t make any difference, because nobody’s listening to me anyhow,” says Dan Beck, a cop and former sheriff from Ohio’s Allen County, who still wears a sheriff’s pin on his jacket lapel.Beck was among the activists, policy wonks, and Republican legislators who are lending their voices this week to conservative radio hosts who’ve gathered in Washington to focus on illegal immigration. Organized by the Federation for American Immigration Reform — a leading advocacy group in the fight against illegal immigration — the confab made it clear that the presidency isn’t the movement’s primary battleground.

Many say they’re not entirely sure what Romney’s positions on immigration really are. And even they were, they wouldn’t believe the promises that he’s making anyway.

“At this point, we’re still trying to figure out — he’s still deciding his immigration position. I’d like him to be a little bit stronger on it,” says Rusty Humphries, a radio host from Atlanta, after he wrapped up a broadcast of his eponymous, nationally syndicated show. When I pressed him to elaborate, he stopped me. “Can I be honest? I’ve been in this room all day long, and this”— he gestures to a flyer — ”is the only thing I’ve seen, that’s been handed to me. So I honestly don’t have any idea what he’s said at this point.”

The flyer passed around the event highlighted a gaffe this week from Romney’s Hispanic outreach director, Bettina Inclan, who told reporters that the former Massachusetts governor was still deciding his stance on immigration. In fact, Romney has an entire section on his campaign Web site devoted to immigration: he wants to establish a verification system akin to e-Verify to screen employees on their immigration status, for instance, and “absolutely opposes any policy that would allow illegal immigrants to ‘cut in line.’” During the GOP primary, Romney routinely attacked Gingrich and other opponents for holding more moderate views.

But anti-immigration activists aren’t feeling too heartened: Inclan’s gaffe has made some even more wary about where Romney really stood, giving them even fewer reasons to believe that he’d stay faithful to his campaign promises. “I could not for a moment assure you that he would be a strong opponent of illegal immigration, or a strong supporter of illegal immigration. I don’t know. And I’m not sure he does,” former GOP Congressman and anti-immigration firebrand Tom Tancredo said outside the confab, shortly before a fan rushed up to get his autograph. (“Keep the faith!” he wrote in a copy of his book, “In Mortal Danger.”)

“[Romney’s] waffled so much. He claims to be a conservative, and he’s trying to convince people he’s truly conservative. Let me know the truth — I’ve been a cop for 30 years,” says Beck.

Instead, anti-immigration activists turning their sights to matters closer home: state laws to keep illegal immigrants away from the polls, bills to replicate Arizona’s police checks on immigration status, and initiatives by local law enforcement to carry out their own crackdowns. Beck, for one, wants more sheriffs to follow the model of Arizona’s Joe Arpaio — “my hero,” he says — and expand their efforts to identify and detain illegal immigrants, putting pressure on Washington from the ground up. Sheriffs “need to get out of their offices and band together as a group,” he says. “Then the group needs to come to Washington D.C. and start pounding on these legislators’ doors.”

They’ve also converged over voter ID laws, which have become a new battleground for conservative activists who want to crack down on voter fraud — and say that illegal immigrants are among the most common perpetrators. The Obama game plan, Tancredo claims, is “to identify those places, those cities and those states where you have high numbers of immigrants, welfare recipients, and that sort of thing, who can be energized to get to the polls — even if they’re not legally able to do so.” Tancredo, in response, is preparing to launch a project in Colorado focusing on the issue. “We’re going to be out in force in battleground states,” promises Tancredo. (As for Romney, he says, “I’ll take him.”)

The voter ID issue previously united the tea party and the anti-immigration movement in 2010, which came together to dispatch poll-watchers across various states and localities. Democrats cast that effort as voter intimidation and suppression, pointing out that there was little evidence of voter fraud in 2010, despite the right’s hullabaloo. But such grassroots focus on electoral nuts-and-bolts could end up helping the GOP ticket in 2012, Romney included: watching polling stations presumably also means voting at them.

Insurgent conservative candidates like Richard Mourdock, who just topped Richard Lugar in the Indiana Senate primary, could also inspire more enthusiasm from disillusioned conservatives. Anti-immigration activists hated Lugar’s support for the DREAM Act, which he originally co-sponsored. If Romney’s elected, Congress “is our only fallback position,” says Tancredo. If it’s Obama, “it’s the only thing we have.”

But like their counterparts on the left, the anti-immigration know that state and local efforts ultimately aren’t enough to overhaul the immigration system to their liking. If the Supreme Court strikes downArizona SB 1070, for instance, Tancredo admits that it will be “back to the drawing board.”

High-Speed Chase Suspect in the Country Illegally

Loaded AK-47, 4-year-old child were in the car

Carlos Munoz-Parra

Via: My Fox Phoenix MARICOPA – An illegal immigrant from Mexico has been arrested after a high speed chase in Pinal County Monday evening. A deputy tried to pull over the speeding vehicle near Meadow View and Green Road. The suspect wouldn’t stop. After about 4 miles, the suspect stopped the vehicle and ran into the desert. The deputy found a loaded AK-47 next to the truck. There was also a female adult passenger and a 4-year-old child. The woman and her daughter are both U.S. citizens. The woman identified the driver of the truck as Carlos Munoz-Parra, 33, of Sinaloa, Mexico. The passenger said Munoz-Parra was giving her a ride. A search was conducted and he was found hiding in the desert. Munoz-Parra admitted he had been drinking and was an illegal immigrant. Marijuana and drug paraphernalia were also found in the vehicle. PCSO says Munoz-Parra has a history of unlawful entry into the United States and has been involved in numerous human smuggling cases. He is facing charges of carrying a deadly weapon in furtherance of a felony, possessing a deadly weapon during chapter 34 offense, possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited possessor, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and unlawful flight from law enforcement.

Obama Rips Arizona Immigration Law On Univision, Says Romney Wants To Racially Profile Hispanics…

Shorter Obama: President panders uncontrollably to Hispanic voters.

Via Charlie Spiering:

. . . “We now have a Republican nominee who said that the Arizona laws are a model for the country; that — and these are laws that potentially would allow someone to be stopped and picked up and asked where their citizenship papers are based on an assumption.”

“Racial profiling,” suggested Acevedo.

“Very troublesome,” Obama answered. “And this is something that the Republican nominee has said should be a model for the country.”

Democrats demand Ariz. governor testify on immigration

Via: Washington Times, By Stephen Dinan

Democrats have called on Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer to come testify before the Senate about her state’s immigration law, which is slated for a Supreme Court hearing later this year.

Ms. Brewer, who got into a finger-wagging exchange with President Obama earlier this year, has championed the law, which allows police to question the immigration status of those they engage in their regular duties.

In a letter to the governor, Sen. Charles Schumer, New York Democrat and chairman of the Senate’s immigration subcommittee, said the federal government has expanded the presence of Border Patrol agents in Arizona, and said he believes the situation is improving — contrary to what Ms. Brewer argues.

“As you frequently ask the President to visit the southern border to discuss border security, we expect that you will be eager to engage in a productive dialogue with the congressional committee responsible for acting upon any border security recommendations you provide,” Mr. Schumer wrote in a letter inviting the governor to appear.

The Obama administration sued to stop Arizona’s law, and lower courts have blocked most of it from taking effect. The Supreme Court has said it will take the case this year.

On Wednesday Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney called Arizona’s law “a model” for the rest of the country during a debate in Arizona.

And he and the rest of the GOP presidential field have vowed to drop the federal government’s lawsuit against the state.

Could Obama Face Felony Charge In Arizona?

AZ Gov. Jan Brewer and President Obama

Via: Conservative Daily News

The State of Arizona is, once again, taking on the Federal Government.  Before, it was on illegal immigrants and the lack of Federal involvement.  This time the fight centers around the healthcare law: Commonly called “Obamacare” or “Harrycare” (after Senator Harry Reid).

Arizona Senate bill SB1475 was introduced yesterday (Feb. 6th) by state senators Gould, Murphy, Griffin, Nelson, Shooter, & Yarbrough.  The text of the legislation raises some serious questions about who could face charges in Arizona if this bill is enacted.  The text in question is as follows:

A. THIS STATE DECLARES THAT THE PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (P.L. 111-148) AND THE HEALTH CARE AND EDUCATION RECONCILIATION ACT OF 2010 (P.L. 111-152) ARE NOT AUTHORIZED BY THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES AND VIOLATE ITS TRUE MEANING AND INTENT AS GIVEN BY THE FOUNDERS AND RATIFIERS AND ARE DECLARED TO BE INVALID IN THIS STATE, SHALL NOT BE RECOGNIZED BY THIS STATE, ARE SPECIFICALLY REJECTED BY THIS SATE AND ARE CONSIDERED VOID AND OF NO EFFECT IN THIS STATE.
B. IT IS THE DUTY OF THE LEGISLATURE OF THIS STATE TO ADOPT AND ENACT ANY AND ALL MEASURES AS MAY BE NECESSARY TO PREVENT THE ENFORCEMENT OF THE PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT AND THE HEALTH CARE AND EDUCATION RECONCILIATION ACT OF 2010 IN THIS STATE.
C. AN OFFICIAL, AGENT OR EMPLOYEE OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT OR ANY EMPLOYEE OF A CORPORATION PROVIDING SERVICES TO THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT WHO ENFORCES OR ATTEMPTS TO ENFORCE AN ACT, ORDER, LAW, STATUTE, RULE OR REGULATION OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT IN VIOLATION OF THIS SECTION IS GUILTY OF A CLASS 4 FELONY.

As is evident, any federal official, agent, or employee who enforces, or attempts to enforce, the healthcare legislation in the state of Arizona will be charged with a Class 4 Felony.

The question raised by the title of this article is “Could Obama Face Felony Charge In Arizona?”.

To start, how could President Obama violate this proposed law after he signed the healthcare bill into law?  That depends on how Arizona officials define “enforcement” of the law.  If the President signed a funding bill which allocated money to enact the Heathcare legislation in the United States – Arizona included – would that be deemed as “enforcing” the law?

For sake of example, let’s say that signing a budget of the mentioned nature is deemed an act of enforcing the healthcare law.  The question remains, can Obama face a felony charge in Arizona?

The short answer is No.  The long answer is Yes.

And here is why

Article II, Section IV of the US Constitution states:

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

In 1970, Rep. Gerald Ford, R-Michigan, succinctly summarized this point when he stated:

“An impeachable offense is whatever a majority of the House of Representatives considers it to be at a given moment in history.”

Thus, based upon the words of former President Ford, President Obama (and successors) could face Impeachment if a majority of the members of the US House of Representatives found that the President had committed a felony in Arizona, and deemed it to be a “high crime or misdemeanor”, as they could with President Ford’s statement in 1970.  The irony would be that Congress would, essentially, indict themselves for committing the same felony – as they wrote and/or passed the same bill the President signed.

The President would then face a trial in front of the US Senate.  If the Senate found the president guilty, he would be removed from office.  Next, as Impeachment does not activate the 5th Amendment’s double jeopardy clause, the ousted President would face trial in AZ State court for the felony imposed by this act.

Members of Congress would possibly open themselves up for prosecution by Arizona officials for their “Yes” votes on the bill, as well, due to the fact they are the ones who allowed the bill to reach the President’s desk.

To sum up the long answer:  Yes it is possible for the President to face charges (depending on the definition of “enforce” in this act by Arizona officials), as could Congress.

Will it ever happen?  Don’t hold your breath.

14 Illegals in 24 Seconds (Caught on Video Crossing Arizona)

Via: Stand With Arizona, by

PARDON THE INTERRUPTION: While America is focused on the Super Bowl, or a meaningless state primary – the constant, steady, MASSIVE stream of illegal aliens continues across our border….unabated, undefended, as the video below video – posted this very morning – demonstrates.

With the Administration reducing National Guard troops on the border by 75% by May 1st…with nearly zero progress on the border fence since 2006…with the Border Patrol ordered away from “wilderness” areas to “protect endangered wildlife”… They keep on coming. 14 illegals captured in just 24 seconds in the video below – 30 miles North of the border near Tucson.

While TSA body scans your toddler, or strip searches your grandma…invaders FROM ANYWHERE can stream across our border unmolested.

Who are those illegal in the video below? Dishwashers, grape pickers? Or perhaps rapists? MS-13?

What are they carrying? Pot, meth, heroin? Or perhaps C4? Anthrax? Plutonium?

Do we have any idea? Does anyone care at all?

Sorry for the interruption. Enjoy the Super Bowl.

Supporters of Arpaio, governor outnumber demonstrators 50-1

ANOTHER PROTEST AGAINST SHERIFF JOE FAILS

WND, by JEROME R. CORSIE
Sheriff Joe Arpaio

A protest against Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Gov. Jan Brewer organized by transplanted attorney-activist Randy Parraz yielded exactly one protestor today as the state legislature met in Phoenix to begin its 2012 regular session.

“Join Citizens for a Better Arizona as we send a message to our Governor and legislators that the Russell Pearce brand of divisive and extremist politics is over,” Parraz posted on his Facebook page, calling for protestors to join him at the state capitol Monday morning. Pearce was the state Senate president and Arpaio ally on immigration recalled last year in a campaign led by Parraz.

Observers on the scene reported Parraz’s group had a permit to assemble, and some 50 Arizona State Police were there.

The lone Parraz supporter, however, was outnumbered by some 50 counter-protesters carrying signs in favor of Arpaio and Brewer, including several who identified themselves as tea party members and a Hispanic supporter of legal immigration.

Arpaio, under fire for a Justice Department report claiming his office discriminates against Hispanics, plans to release results next month of his Cold Case Posse’s investigation of Barack Obama’s eligibility for Arizona’s 2012 ballot.

Arthur Olibas, who identified himself as a “Latino legal immigrant tea party patriot,” told WND he supported Arpaio because, “He’s the only one who has the courage to enforce the laws of Arizona and the Constitution of the United States.”

WND previously reported that Parraz is a leftist political activist now living in Arizona who has made his career applying Saul Alinsky “community organizer” skills. Parraz has worked with radical leftist “progressive” movements in the United States and Canada, including staff jobs with the AFL-CIO nationally and as Arizona state director.

After ousting Pearce – who championed the passage of Arizona’s tough immigration bill, SB 1070 –Parraz has set his sites on Arpaio and Brewer, who both favor strict enforcement of Arizona and U.S. immigration laws.

Parraz is operating under the auspices of Citizens for a Better Arizona, a 501(c)4 organization that appears to be violating IRS rules by engaging in partisan political campaigns.

Parraz and his Citizens for a Better Arizona have announced their intention to pressure the upcoming Jan. 11 meeting of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to place the group’s complaints against Arpaio on the agenda. Parraz wants to advance a motion requiring the board to ask for Arpaio’s resignation.

WND has also reported Parraz and a group of ACORN activists were arrested in 2008 for disrupting a meeting of the Maricopa supervisors.

Counter-protesters supporting Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Phoenix Monday

Professional political agitator

Parraz has a protest record stretching back to his days in the 1990s as a graduate student at Harvard and a law student at the University of California at Berkeley.

The first published report WND can find documenting his political activism was a protest of about 150 students and faculties and administrators he organized as a graduate student at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, reported by the Harvard Crimson on March 9, 1994.

According to the Crimson, the rally was attended by a coalition of Kennedy School student groups, including the Black Caucus, the Latino Caucus, the Women’s Caucus and the Asian Caucus, demanding the Kennedy School meet the Department of Labor’s recommended diversity levels by hiring more women and minority faculty.

Parraz next surfaced as the president of a Latino Civil Rights Task Force, a group the Washington Post reported on Jan. 23, 1997, was created to field complaints from Latinos and promote Latino concerns to city officials in response to unrest in May 1991 by Central Americans in Mount Pleasant, a neighborhood in the District of Columbia.

Counter-protesters supporting Sheriff Joe Arpaio

The Washington Post article described Parraz as “a self-confident, articulate Mexican American labor union organizer from California.”

WND has reported Parraz, working as an AFL-CIO organizer, brought Canadian protestors through Vancouver, Canada, to participate in the 1999 protests against the World Trade Organization in Seattle in which an estimated 40,000 protesters engaged in street violence, which in protest lore was subsequently tagged as the “Battle of Seattle.”

The Orange County Register also reported on Dec. 8, 2001, that Parraz was arrested after protesters he organized to encourage national hotel chains to employ more Hispanics locally gathered in the middle of an intersection, disrupted traffic and refused to disperse as ordered by police.

Leftist blogger Bob Lord termed Parraz “a True Progressive Hero” in a DailyKos.com piece on Nov. 9, 2011, thanking Parraz for having “essentially dedicated his life to the cause [of recalling Pearce] for the better part of a year.” Parraz supported Lord’s candidacy as a Democrat for U.S. Congress in Arizona’s third congressional district.

Is MCSO deputy’s killing tied to Sedona murders and Operation Fast and Furious?

By: Linda Bentley, Maricopa County Crime Examiner

As MCSO looks into possible tie to murdered Sedona couple, others wait to see if weapon traces back to Holder’s Operation Fast and Furious

Deputy William Coleman was shot and killed early Sunday morning while responding to a burglary in progress call. Credit: Maricopa County Sheriff's Office

ANTHEM – Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy William Coleman, 50, was shot and killed shortly after 4 a.m. on Sunday when he and two other deputies responded to a burglary in progress call in the Anthem community.

When deputies arrived outside the Anthem Medical Plaza behind the CVS shopping center at the northwest corner of Anthem Way and Galvin Parkway, a suspect emerged from a parked minivan and began shooting at the deputies with a semiautomatic rifle.

According to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, deputies returned fire, killing the suspect, who has not yet been identified.

Arpaio said although Coleman was wearing a vest, that kind of body armor is no match for semiautomatic weapons.

Coleman, a 20-year veteran and the first MCSO deputy to be killed in the line of duty since 1995, leaves behind a wife and several children, including a 4 and 7-year-old.

The incident was still under investigation several hours later with the entire shopping center cordoned off with crime scene tape and it was unknown if anything was stolen by the suspect or if there were other suspects involved.

Deputies also rescued a pit bull that was inside the suspect’s van.

Arpaio stated, “There is a war on against police across the country. We live in a violent world.”

However, he added, “We’re pretty sure this is just an isolated incident.”

Arpaio said, “Unfortunately, one of our deputies was killed in the line of duty today. It is extremely sad for everyone. He was an excellent officer.”

MCSO is also investigating whether this incident is related to the shooting deaths of two New Hampshire visitors, whose bodies were discovered two days earlier at an overlook in Sedona on Arizona 89A in a red Subaru with the engine still running.

The victims in the Sedona incident, identified as James Johnson and Carol Raynsford, both 63, were shot with the same type of semiautomatic .223 rifle as Coleman.

Ballistics testing was scheduled for Monday to determine if the shots in both cases were actually fired from the same weapon.

Another possibility was raised in a comment on Doug Ross’ article titled, “Remember the good old days when we had real media?” posted on the blog directorblue.blogspot.com

“Duke C.” stated Attorney General Eric Holder and the U.S. Department of Justice are “holding their breath that this weapon is not connected to gunwalker’s Fast and Furious.”

His comment was later posted on the “Sipsey Street Irregulars” blog, where Mike Vanderboegh has been tirelessly covering the Fast and Furious scandal.

Vanderboegh said there were many AR-type weapons sold as part of Fast and Furious, and stated, “[I]t will be interesting to see what the trace turns up. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is not known for his love of the feds, so we shall hear presently if the weapon traces back to Eric Holder’s gunwalker conspiracy.”

Cop killing in Arizona connected to Fast and Furious?

Via: Examiner, By ,

Yesterday morning at 4 a.m. in Maricopa County, Arizona a veteran sheriff’s deputy was shot to death with a high-powered rifle after responding to a report of a burglary at a strip mall in Anthem, near Interstate Highway 17. Deputies at the scene say that the perpetrator came out of nowhere, sending a spray of bullets their way.

But what makes the story of potential national significance is the fact that under the surface there is talk that the gun used to kill the deputy may be a ‘Fast and Furious’ weapon that the Obama Administration placed into the hands of Mexican drug cartels in its ‘Project Gunwalker’ scheme that has now become perhaps the single biggest scandal in the history of American politics.

The story of the murder was first reported byAZCentral.com, one of the major news outlets in Arizona. However, unlike most of its stories, the news organization disabled its comment section. This led one observer to do some checking around behind the scenes.

Several key facts stand out:

1. The perpetrator could or would not be identified by law enforcement officials, although the sheriff’s office stated that an identification would be made public today after the body could be examined.

2. The deputy died in spite of the fact that he was wearing bulletproof gear.

3. Sheriff’s officials believe that the murder is tied to 2 other killings near I-17, near Sedona in Yavapai County 2 days earlier. A couple on vacation from New Hampshire was murdered with a high powered rifle similar to the one used to kill the Maricopa County deputy.

4. A reader at the Doug Ross Journal stated in the comment section that Eric Holder, the DOJ, and the ATF are ‘holding their breaths’ hoping that ballistic tests will not show that the deputy was killed with a Fast and Furious gun.

It is to be noted that the Sheriff of Maricopa County is ‘Sheriff Joe’ Arpaio, who has been at the center of an ongoing skirmish with the Obama Administration, the Justice Department, and Eric Holder over the Administration’s failure to secure the southern border. It is believed that given Sheriff Joe’s ongoing battle with the Administration, including Eric Holder’s threats to take legal action against him, the Sheriff will fully investigate the evidence and report it to the media if there is any connection whatsoever to the Gunwalker scandal.
