Mexico says key figure in Tijuana drug gang caught

MEXICO CITY – The Mexican military says it has detained the principle lieutenant in the Arellano Felix cartel that controlled drug trafficking in Tijuana for two decades.

Army spokesman Col. Ricardo Trevilla says 34-year-old Juan Francisco Sillas Rocha was captured in the border city across from San Diego, California.

He said Monday that Sillas allegedly reported directly to Fernando Sanchez Arellano, a nephew of the original Arellano Felix brothers who now runs the gang. Trevilla said Sillas was supposed to take on the Sinaloa Cartel in 2008, when Mexico‘s most powerful cartel stepped up efforts to take over Tijuana routes.

That battle is partly to blame for the spike in Tijuana violence between 2007 and 2009.

Mexico arrests alleged cartel hitmen in Acapulco

Mexico City, Mexico (Reuters) – Police raids in Acapulco free a kidnap victim and arrest four alleged cartel hitmen from two major drug gangs as the picturesque Pacific city struggles to tame surging violence.

Mexican police on Thursday announced the capture of four alleged hit men belonging to two major drug cartels operating in the tourist hotspot of Acapulco.

The suspects were presented to the media in Mexico City with police hailing the arrests as a blow for Acapulco’s notorious cartels.

Following a police raid on property allegedly belonging to the “La Barredora” drug gang, authorities freed a kidnap victim and nabbed one of the cartel’s main players Martin Campos who is believed to be behind numerous abductions and murders in the city.

“Elements of the Federal Police have freed a kidnap victim in Puerto de Acapulco, Guerrero and two suspects belonging to the “La Barredora” criminal organisation were arrested, one of them being Martin Campos Salado, alias “El Chivo”. He was identified as responsible for coordinating kidnappings and leading hitmen in the “La Barredora” cartel”, said Regional Security Director for the Federal Police, Luis Cardenas.

Another raid in the drug-ravaged city also saw authorities target rival local cartel, the Independent Acapulco Cartel.

With violence rising and tourists numbers dropping, police are talking up the recent operations as proof that authorities are serious about ridding the tourist mecca of its warring gangs.

Earlier in the week, Federal Police arrested La Barredora’s alleged leader, Christian Arturo Henandez Tarin in the outskirts of Mexico City.

“The Independent Acapulco Cartel was also hit by arrests by the Federal Police, so they have been weakened.

Those that we have just found were part of a major operation against the La Barredora and with these detentions, we are arresting (members) from both cartels, I can say that we are close to the complete eradication of both cartels from the city of Acapulco,” Cardenas said.

An offshoot of the brutal Beltran-Leyva drug gang, the upcoming Independent Acapulco Cartel has been battling relative newcomer “La Barredora” for control of the Pacific port city’s lucrative trafficking routes.

As authorities increasingly target well-established cartels such as the Zetas and Sinaloa gang, smaller groups have risen up to take their place, further fuelling viscous turf wars between cartels.

About 44,000 people have died in drug-related killings in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon went to war on the drug gangs shortly after taking office at the end of 2006.

Violence was long concentrated in northern Mexico, but cities farther south, including Acapulco, have increasingly been swept up in the lawlessness.
