Syrian Christians Fear Islamist Rebels Will Slaughter Them If Regime Falls…

DAMASCUS, Syria (USA Today) — Hani Sarhan is a Christian who says none of his relatives works with the regime of Bashar Assad or has anything to do with it.

“But what we heard from (the protesters) at the beginning of this revolution saying, ‘Christians to Beirut, Alawites to the coffin,’ started us thinking about the real aim of this revolution,” he said. “So from this point of view, fearing for my life, I declared my support for President Assad.”

Muslims dominate this nation of 22 million people, but Christians can be found at all levels of Syria’s government, business community and military. The 2 million Christians here trace their roots to ancient communities and have survived under many rulers as Christian enclaves in other Arab nations, such as Saudi Arabia, have withered. [...]

Many of Syria’s Christians continue to stand by the regime not out of support for Assad but out of fear of civil war if rebels gain strength, or worse, if they win and install an Islamist government hostile to religious minorities.

Qatana, a town 20 miles southwest of Damascus, is home to a Christian community of several hundred families. Protests here against the Assad regime have prompted military incursions and clashes between renegade soldiers and the regular army. At checkpoints surrounding the town, some Christians chat to Alawite security officers. Others offer water and whiskey. Christians firmly believe that the Alawite regime will keep them safe.

John McCain, Mitch Daniels come to Dick Lugar’s rescue

Mitch Daniels and John McCain are coming to Sen. Dick Lugar’s rescue, POLITICO has learned.

The Indiana governor and the Arizona senator have cut ads on Lugar’s behalf that are likely to air in the closing weeks of his neck-and-neck Republican primary contest.

While the details of the commercials are unclear, two GOP sources confirm that the two political heavyweights are featured in television and radio spots encouraging the election of Lugar to a seventh term.Text Size

A source with knowledge of their participation cautioned that no final decision has been made to run the commercials.

But the pair of high profile surrogates would make a powerful closing argument for Lugar, whose polling lead in the May 8 primary has evaporated in recent months.

The term-limited Daniels is by far the most popular politician in the state, boasting a 63 percent job approval rating according to a recent Howey/DePauw Indiana Battleground Poll.

McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee who carries immense credibility on foreign affairs, could buttress the argument that Lugar’s breadth of experience is invaluable as ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Fresh polling dropped Wednesday showed Lugar may be in need of a late jolt.

Richard Mourdock, the two-term state treasurer, sits dead even with the incumbent, according to a poll conducted by John McLaughlin & Associates for Mourdock’s campaign.

The survey, taken Monday and Tuesday of 400 likely GOP voters, shows Mourdock capturing 42 percent of the vote to Lugar’s 41 percent.

The McLaughlin memo notes that Mourdock has been able to erase a 12-point deficit since January, despite being outspent by approximately 3-to-1 on television.

Earlier this month, Democratic pollster Fred Yang argued that while there’s no quibbling with Daniels’ popularity, there are doubts about its transferability to other Republicans.

“[T]he Republicans in the legislature have a net positive rating of 38% favorable and 36% unfavorable, which is better than the Democrats in the state legislature (32% favorable, 39% unfavorable). Not only is the GOP legislature perceived only marginally better than the Democrats, but also the GOP woefully underperforms the GOP governor,” Yang wrote for Howey Politics Indiana, in a piece assessing Lugar’s chances of re-election

USA Under Siege: Congress and Obama Vote in Secret to End Bill of Rights and other Atrocities

Recently, leftist John McCain (R-AZ)—one of the GOP “Sleeper Cell” members?—partnered with leftist Carl Levin (D-MI) in greatly increasing the Executive branch’s power over the American people.  The ‘McCain-Levin US citizen Imprisonment Bill’ effectively does away with the Fourteenth Amendment’s “due process (under the law)” clause which mandates:  “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”  Obama signed the bill as quickly as possible and then immediately issued a signing statement outlining his new powers.  In it, he states:  “I have concluded that section 1022 provides the minimally acceptable amount of flexibility to protect national security. Specifically, I have signed this bill on the understanding that section 1022 provides the executive branch with broad authority to determine how best to implement it, and with the full and unencumbered ability to waive any military custody requirement, including the option of waiving appropriate categories of cases when doing so is in the national security interests of the United States.” Note:  Leftists are leftists wherever they deign to appear.

In other words, although Section 1022 provides a bare skeleton structure (one sentence) “protection” for US citizens and legal resident aliens, Obama claims he can (and I suspect will soon) affect its subordination-to-his-will and use the “national security” excuse to eliminate due process for those who oppose him and his policies.  He claimed this “power” with his signing statement.  And yet, The Republicans in Congress (even those who falsely represented themselves as being “conservative”) went along with and voted for this tyrannical legislation.  Sadly, even my representative Steve Pearce (R-NM) voted for it as well as the extreme H.R. 347 that not only says protestors may not protest any government official within the confines of now “restricted” government buildings but, apparently, gives the Secret Service (SS) the power to say that wherever the POTUS is located (think Obama) will be designated as a restricted area in which no “free” anti-Obama-speech shall be allowed.

To be fair, I emailed Pearce’s Press Secretary Jamie Dickerson and was provided with his position statement on HR 1540:  “There were also important objections on the conservative side to this bill, dealing specifically with whether or not the provision in section 1022 excluding American citizens from the “covered persons” language went far enough. This was discussed thoroughly in the Republican Conference before the bill went to the floor for debate. Two of my colleagues, one of whom sits on the Armed Services Committee, had objections to the language.

“However, after consulting with the Chairman on protection of civil liberties, and getting a supportive response that the Chairman would work in the future to assure our rights are not violated, both Congressmen voted for it. I listened to all objections, from constituents and other Members of the House. I read the language personally many times, and asked my staff to research every objection brought to our attention. We concluded, after many internal discussions and hours of research, that section 1022 sufficiently protected our liberties.”

Hmmm.  Here is how the protection of liberties (in Section 1022) statement reads:  “Makes such requirement inapplicable to U.S. citizens or U.S. lawful resident aliens.”  That’s it—-somewhat nebulous (the word “requirement” does not necessarily restrict it from being used and “inapplicable” will apparently be overridden at the whim of Obama).  This is, also, the section to which Obama claims “broad authority to determine how best to implement it, and with the full and unencumbered ability to waive any military custody requirement, including the option of waiving appropriate categories.” 

Then, there is the passed in secret HR 347, which restricts free speech (First Amendment being summarily dismantled) to the point of its being denied.  Mr. Dickman’s response is:  “We’re still gathering information on the articles constituents have sent, but our interpretation of the accusations in the articles and the Judiciary Committee staff who drafted the bill conclude that the accusations are inaccurate. The bill does not change Secret Service practices from the past. Again, we are still gathering information, but our position on this bill is the same as it was three weeks ago when it came up for a vote.”

Rep. Pearce is not unique in his support of both of these bills.  Most in Congress voted to pass both of them.  He is just one of the latest apparent casualties to shed himself of the restrictions of working for the people of his district and our country.  I strongly suspect this is to protect themselves from the active electorate who now sees that Obama and his supplicant—on both sides of the aisle—Congress are working only to enrich themselves.  However, none of them would need said protection from the US citizenry if they actually listened to and abided by the directions from their respective constituencies.

If, in 2012, we do not elect true and verifiable Constitutionalists to replace many of our fallen brethren we as a free (the few vestiges that are still left) country and people are finished.  Most of it is already gone.  Either we vote in a majority of Constitutionalists or we can kiss ourselves goodbye.  By the way, is there a Constitutional Conservative slated to run against Speaker Boehner in Ohio and Sen. McConnell in Kentucky?  Just asking.

MSNBC Touts Sen. McCain’s Conceding There’s a ‘War on Women,’ Grants Softball Interview to Activist Hoping to Silence Limbaugh

Republican senator and 2008 GOP presidential nominee John McCain’s passing concession yesterday to Meet the Press host David Gregory that there is in fact a “war on women among Republicans” was the perfect springboard for MSNBC’s Richard Lui to conduct a softball interview with former Planned Parenthood president Gloria Feldt.  Lui, substitute hosting the March 19 edition of Chris Jansing Reports, introduced the segment with the relevant clip of McCain, noting that the feminist author had gone “toe-to-toe” with McCain on social issues and that “this was a change.”

Feldt enthused that she was happy to see the old John McCain back, recalling fondly that the first time she met the senator, his rhetoric was more socially liberal. “His instincts were to say women should have the right to make their own child-bearing decisions.” That said, Feldt made sure to denounce McCain for having “a 100 percent anti-choice, anti-family planning voting record.”

“What this contraceptive coverage issue has smoked out is just how anti-women their voting records have been over the years,” Feldt added.

A skeptical journalist, or at least one game for playing devil’s advocate, might have turned the tables on Feldt by pressing if the liberal Democratic staunchness on the contraceptive mandate illustrated the left-wing’s war on religious conscience. After all, why force a religious institution to violate its religious beliefs by offering something they believe is fundamentally sinful or immoral.

But alas, Lui opted instead to lob softballs at Feldt on this matter and pretty much everything else in the interview. Here are the rest of the questions Lui asked Feldt:

  • So when you see Sen. McCain here in no, in very simple terms, just saying no, we need to change the narrative here, does this mean that you think that there will be other Republicans also following that line, regardless of what their reputation is and what their record is?
  • Well, it appears, Gloria, that that message is getting through, at least when it comes to fundraising. EMILY’s List, their president saying that fundraising in the first quarter was one of the best ever, according to what that president said from EMILY’s List. Do you think this is going to translate to votes, since you were alluding to that just now?
  • Seventy-seven percent is the number that we have from the Bloomberg poll that say this [birth control] should not be a topic [in political debate]
  • I want to get to Rush [Limbaugh] in a second, but you’re saying you’re agreeing with that poll saying that 77 percent say it should not be a political topic. But hasn’t it aided that movement, has it brought attention to a major point that is being discussed with social conservatives and the rest of the electorate?
  • Are you glad this debate is here right now, front and center?
  • It [controversy] makes you talk about it?
  • So we’ve got the money coming out, you’re glad that this issue is now front-and-center, you’ve also written about it, there’s a piece today that’s coming out in The Nation today, right, and you’ve talked about Rush [Limbaugh] in that. Tell me what it’s about?
  • Nobody’s come out to defend him on his comments, but you are putting in question here the freedom of speech. And I know in your writings you said that was one of the issues, you thought back to the day when you had to think of women’s issues and freedom of speech.
  • So why is it okay here then?
  • Do you think that the movement, the energy that’s behind this right now is great enough to actually remove Rush?
  • Outside of that [if market pressure/boycotts don't push LImbaugh off the air first] though?
  • If he corrects this sort of action in the future, if he doesn’t make such statements in the future, okay to stay then?

Former GOP presidential candidate John McCain said yesterday he fears Republicans will be stuck with a bloodied nominee so sapped by months of campaign attacks that he can’t beat President Obama — even as the party’s four combatants prepare to do battle again today in Michigan and Arizona.

“This is like watching a Greek tragedy,” McCain told the Herald. “It’s the negative campaigning and the increasingly personal attacks … it should have stopped long ago. Any utility from the debates has been exhausted, and now it’s just exchanging cheap shots and personal shots followed by super PAC attacks.”

The Arizona Republican, who endorsed Romney earlier this year and is set to rally with him in Phoenix tonight, said he believes the former Bay State governor will get the nomination, yet he worries a long, drawn out primary campaign could leave Romney too wounded to triumph in November.

Bad Idea: McCain And Lindsey Graham Call For Arming Syrian Rebel Forces…

(The Hill) — Two prominent Republican U.S. senators urged that the United States arm opposition forces in Syria Sunday as the government of Bashar al-Assad continued a bloody crackdown on the protests that have engulfed the nation.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who both serve on the Senate Armed Services committee, argued that arming rebel fighters in the country could help beat back a Syrian government with close ties to Iran.

“Breaking Syria apart from Iran could be as important to containing a nuclear Iran as sanctions,” Graham said at a press conference in Kabul, according to the New York Times. “If the Syrian regime is replaced with another form of government that doesn’t tie its future to the Iranians, the world is a better place.”

Graham and McCain were in Afghanistan as part of a larger tour through the Middle East. The former GOP presidential candidate said that Syrian rebels needed help to defend themselves.

“I believe there are ways to get weapons to the opposition without direct United States involvement,” McCain said. “The Iranians and the Russians are providing Bashar Assad with weapons. People that are being massacred deserve to have the ability to defend themselves.”

“So I am not only not opposed, but I am in favor of weapons being obtained by the opposition,” McCain added.

BENGHAZI, Libya – U.S. Sen. John McCain, one of the strongest proponents in Congress of the American military intervention in Libya, called Friday for increased international military support of the rebel fighters.

He said the rebels need weapons, training, battlefield intelligence and close air support.

The top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee spoke in Benghazi, a city that has been the opposition capital in the rebel-held eastern Libya.

McCain said he was in Benghazi “to get an on-the-ground assessment of the situation” and to meet with opposition leaders and members of the rebel military.

“They are my heroes,” McCain said of the rebels as he walked out of a local hotel in Benghazi.

(The Hill)Congress should take up work on comprehensive immigration reform once the U.S. borders are secure, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Wednesday.

McCain, a longtime proponent of comprehensive reform who had tacked right in his race for reelection last year, said that an immigration deal could be an area of compromise between Republicans and Democrats.

John McCain“Once we get the border secured — and we can get the border secured — I would look forward to working on comprehensive immigration reform,” the 2008 Republican presidential nominee said on NBC’s “Today” show.

The Arizona senator had in the past favored legislation that would give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. But McCain tacked to his right after facing a primary challenge from former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R).
