COLO. DAY OF PRAYER DEEMED AN UNCONSTITUTIONAL ‘GOV’T ENDORSEMENT OF RELIGION’ BY JUDGES

Colorado Court of Appeals Rules Day of Prayer Unconstitutional | FFRFAtheist activists are cheering after the Colorado Court of Appeals ruled on Thursday that proclamations made by the state’s governors over the past few years in favor of a state Day of Prayer were unconstitutional.

From 2004 to 2009, the state’s former governors, Bill Bitter and Bill Owens, made official pro-Colorado Day of Prayer statements that the three-judge panel ruled against. The case, which was brought by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a secular non-profit that frequently fights faith in the public square, will certainly make waves among the faithful.

The Denver Post provides a recap of the legal drama:

The legal challenge to the Colorado Day of Prayer was made in 2008 against Gov. Bill Ritter by the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation. The foundation also won a federal case in 2010, FFRF v. Obama, in which a U.S. district court ruled the National Day of Prayer unconstitutional. In 2011, however, the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals found the foundation had lacked standing to make the case. Yet the Colorado appellate court affirmed FFRF’s standing.

The prayer day proclamations were particularly problematic, the judges said, because they included Bible verses and religious themes that were seen as state endorsements of religion. Thus, they ruled that the statements constituted a violation of Colorado’s state constitution, as they purportedly favored the people who engage in prayer among all others.

“In doing so, they undermine the premise that the government serves believers and nonbelievers equally,” wrote Judge Steven Bernard in a 73-page decision, The Post reports (read the ruling in its entirety here).

Overall, the judges found the Colorado Day of Prayer proclamations to be “predominately religious” and a “government endorsement of religion over non-religion.”

“We’re exulting over the fact that reason has prevailed, and constitutional rights have been affirmed,” gushed Annie Laurie Gaylor, the co-president of the FFRF.

The ruling didn’t include National Day of Prayer statements that were made by the governors. The appeals judges have sent the case back to a trial court, where a decision surrounding whether Colorado governors should be banned from making future prayer statements will be made.

Eric Brown, a spokesman for Gov. John Hickenlooper, says that the state will consult with Attorney General John Suthers to weigh whether the decision should be appealed.

Syrian Christians Fear Islamist Rebels Will Slaughter Them If Regime Falls…

Via: Zip. If the McRINO brigade gets its way we will be paying for the river of Christian blood.

DAMASCUS, Syria (USA Today) — Hani Sarhan is a Christian who says none of his relatives works with the regime of Bashar Assad or has anything to do with it.

“But what we heard from (the protesters) at the beginning of this revolution saying, ‘Christians to Beirut, Alawites to the coffin,’ started us thinking about the real aim of this revolution,” he said. “So from this point of view, fearing for my life, I declared my support for President Assad.”

Muslims dominate this nation of 22 million people, but Christians can be found at all levels of Syria’s government, business community and military. The 2 million Christians here trace their roots to ancient communities and have survived under many rulers as Christian enclaves in other Arab nations, such as Saudi Arabia, have withered. [...]

Many of Syria’s Christians continue to stand by the regime not out of support for Assad but out of fear of civil war if rebels gain strength, or worse, if they win and install an Islamist government hostile to religious minorities.

Qatana, a town 20 miles southwest of Damascus, is home to a Christian community of several hundred families. Protests here against the Assad regime have prompted military incursions and clashes between renegade soldiers and the regular army. At checkpoints surrounding the town, some Christians chat to Alawite security officers. Others offer water and whiskey. Christians firmly believe that the Alawite regime will keep them safe.

Islamic North Sudan Declares War On Christian South Sudan…

Via: Zip

I’m almost scared to ask, what side will the Obama administration support? Considering South Sudan’s pro-American president still wears the cowboy hat George W. Bush gave him and when the south officially become its own country he thanked their Christian supporters in America I have a sneaking suspicion who.

KAMPALA Uganda (Dow Jones) — Sudan’s president, Omar al-Bashir, Thursday declared war on South Sudan, vowing to topple its government.

The move comes after Sudan’s parliament passed a resolution branding South Sudan’s ruling party an enemy that “must be fought until it is defeated.”

Sudan and South Sudan are embroiled in the worst clashes along their poorly defined border since the secession of the South last summer. The United Nations Security Council is considering sanctions on both countries in an attempt to end the violence, and demanded South Sudanese forces withdraw from their occupation of the 60,000-barrels-a-day oil field Heglig oil field. Both countries continue to ignore calls to end the fighting.

On a visit Thursday to the oil-rich, restive border state of South Kordofan, Bashir rallied his troops, which are now engaged on three fronts with South Sudan.

“Heglig isn’t the end, it is the beginning, and we shall go all the way to [South Sudanese capital] Juba,” Bashir told a rally.

South Sudan’s army spokesman, Col. Philip Aguer, dismissed Bashir’s threat, saying that the South’s army would keep Sudan’s aggression at bay.

“If they didn’t defeat us when we were a green army, how will they defeat us now,” he said.

Media Matters’ targets revealed: business, wealth, Christianity

When David Brock applied for tax-exempt status for Media Matters for America, he told the IRS exactly who his group would be fighting against: businesses, wealthy Americans and conservative Christians.

“Media Matters for America (MMA) believes that news reporting and analysis by the American media, with its eye on profit margin and preservation of the status quo, has become biased,” read the group’s application, obtained by The Daily Caller, “It is common for news and commentary by the press to present viewpoints that tend to overly promote corporate interests, the rights of the wealthy, and a conservative, Christian-influenced ideology.”

Treasury Department documents — 88 pages that The Daily Caller obtained through a public records request to the IRS — reveal for the first time how the organization described its mission while applying for coveted 501(c)(3) non-profit status.

Media Matters has made no secret of its adherence to progressive principles, but flagging Christianity as having undue influence in media is the latest revelation about the group’s treatment of religion. (RELATED: Complete coverage of Media Matters for America)

The Democratic-aligned ARCA Foundation specifically supplied Media Matters with a $50,000 grant in 2006 “to support a Religious Broadcasting Project to expand the monitoring and fact checking of religious broadcasts,” TheDC reported in February.

A present-day search of the Media Matters website for the terms “religion” and “Christianity” yields a steady stream of anti-Christian criticism and posts aimed at dismissing Christians’ religious concern over President Obama’s contraception mandate.

Another search revealed a large number of articles critical of perceived “Islamophobia.”

The American media are dominated by conservatism and should be called out for that bias, Media Matters claimed in its tax-exempt application.

“The domination of media’s coverage of news by a single ideology betrays the public trust and weakens our democracy,” the group wrote. “MMA has been established to identify occurrences of excessive bias in the American media, educate the public as to their existence, and work with members of the media to reduce them in order to ensure that the public receives news coverage and information that is not only accurate but free from domination by a particular world view.”

Media Matters relied on a survey it commissioned in 2004 to back its claims of conservative media bias. “[D]espite longstanding conservative complaints of liberal media bias,” read an inaugural press release supplied to the IRS, “a plurality of the American electorate today believe that conservatives have more power and influence in the media today than do liberals.”

Conversely, a 2011 Gallup survey showed 60 percent of Americans saw bias in the media, with 47 percent of respondents saying the media are “too liberal.” Only 13 percent said the media are “too conservative.”

Those data have seen little change since Media Matters’ arrival in 2004, when 48 percent of those polled perceived liberal bias while just 15 percent perceived conservative bias.

Media Matters was eventually granted its tax-exempt status and classified as an educational charity.

The group continues to ignore requests for comment for this story and others.

TEBOW TRADE TO JETS RE-IGNITES ANTI-CHRISTIAN MAINSTREAM MEDIA

Tim Tebow’s trade to the New York Jets–and into the nation’s number one media market–has garnered a lot of attention in the press. And the mainstream media’s scorn for his religion has been over-the-top.

Tebow mocking, of course, is not new, but it’s now reached an all-time high.

The Atlantic mocked the Jets–and Christianity–in an article entitled, “New York City Sports, Now with Even More Jesus.

On ESPN, Skip Bayless asked Tebow how he felt about being one of the most polarizing, divisive players in the NFL because of his faith.

And recently, on MSNBC, The Nation sports editor Dave Zirin remarked, “There are a lot of LGBT people that live in New York City who are also football fans and they might want to know why the new, possibly starting, quarterback for the New York Jets wants them to move backwards 30 or 40 years.” Since when does an athlete’s position on a social issue disqualify him from playing a sport?

CBSChicago.com writer Dan Bernstein labeled Tebow as a “little more than an affable simpleton” and criticized Tebow’s fans, calling them “lunatic-fringe cultists.”

Prior to the Super Bowl, Rabbi Joshua Hammerman opined in The Jewish Week that “If Tebow wins the Super Bowl, against all odds, it will buoy his faithful, and emboldened faithful can do insane things, like burning mosques, bashing gays and indiscriminately banishing immigrants.” The Jewish Week and Hammerman later apologized.

The attacks expanded to the absurd: MSNBC mocked Tebow’s reading ability when he read Green Eggs and Ham for Pizza Hut’s “BOOK IT!” children’s reading program.

In December 2011, Bill Press, who likes to lecture conservatives about civility, said on his radio show that Tim Tebow needs to “STFU” about Jesus, calling him a “disgrace” and an “embarrassment.” However, he was just getting started with those remarks. He continued: “By dragging God into every football game, Tebow makes a mockery of Chrisianity–and trivializes religion. The truth is, God doesn’t care who wins an election, a bingo game, or a football game. Sorry, Tebow, Jesus is not a Broncos fan.”

He then went on to mock Tebow’s fans: “Now, if you’re one of the silly millions of Americans who loves Tebow’s in-your-face kind of Christianity, consider this. What if he were a devout Muslim, who bowed to Mecca after every touchdown and shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’?”

Press and the other members refuse to see the bias and hypocrisy in their remarks. If Tebow was a Muslim the media would not dare to make the comments they are making about him or his faith.

The mainstream media did not pick up on his rant, and Press felt no need to apologize.

NBC sports analyst Jelisa Castrodale even remarked that hatred of Tebow is directly tied to his faith.

Why can’t the media just report the facts? Why is there such a need to criticize others who are different from them?

Unfortunately, the mainstream media is predominantly secular and liberal–and intolerant of others who don’t hold their views. They claim to honor “free speech” and the First Amendment, but hold a double standard when a Christian athlete expresses his faith by attacking his character–which is squeaky clean, in this case.

Criticism is to be expected, to be sure–Tebow is one of the most famous and popular athletes of his time, with a following of over 9,000 tweets per second in one game alone.

But what about reporting on the fact that he is a role model for younger athletes, especially when professional sports teams are plagued by sex scandals, drugs, steroids, and women abuse? If anything, Tebow represents that which is good about sports and athleticism.

Unfortunately, when journalists dismiss the role of religion in someone’s life they miss out on telling some of the great stories within our culture. They also miss out on what is good about journalism—uncovering the truth or “uncomfortable” facts, being curious about life, investigating and describing facts in a sincere and unbiased way, and remaining open to learning and encouraging others to do the same.

When journalists avoid discussing topics that are uncomfortable to them, they then provide imbalanced and unfair coverage and deprive their audience of important answers and information that could be helpful and life-giving.

CHRISTIANS WHO SIGNED PETITIONS INVESTIGATED

Opponents of El Paso mayor’s same-sex benefits plan targeted for prosecution

Via: WND

A prosecutor has decided to pursue and possibly charge members of El Paso area churches who promoted petitions opposing the city administration’s decision to implement benefits for same-sex partners even after voters decided not to allow that.

The result is an emergency appeal to the state Supreme Court by attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund, which has been working on the freedom of speech dispute.

The organization today warned that hundreds of Christians and other El Paso citizens “are facing jail time for exercising their constitutionally protected right to speak out against Mayor John Cook’s policies.”

The issue arose when voters in November 2010 placed on the ballot and passed an ordinance prohibiting unmarried domestic partner benefits in their city.

Several members of the city council refused to follow the will of the vote, and voted to rescind the ordinance approved by voters. The mayor joined in the effort.

That produced a grassroots recall campaign seeking to remove the mayor and council members who violated the will of the people.

TIM TEBOW TEACHES THOUSANDS OF CONGREGANTS AT LAS VEGAS CHURCH HOW TO ‘TEBOW’

Via: The Blaze

While the football season may be over for Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, the 24-year-old outspoken Christian took some time out on Saturday and Sunday to speak at Canyon Ridge Church in Las Vegas, Nevada. Aside from discussing his football career, Tebow delved into his faith and the “Tebowing” phenomenon that has taken the world by storm.

“I’d run to the corner of the end zone, I’d do my last final stretch, I’d pray and I’d get up and do like three or four jumps and I’d sprint down the sidelines, and then I’d have like one or two cuts,” Tebow told the audience, describing how the “Tebowing” phenomenon first began. “And that was like my final routine and it was like, ‘game on.’”

Tim Tebow Speaks at Canyon Ridge Church in Nevada

Of particular surprise to the young player, though, is the reaction he has received as a result of these prayers.

“I am sure I am not the first athlete to pray though,” Tebow told the audience. “What is funny is I have been doing this exact same routine for the last seven years and this is the first [time] people started talking about it and it became a thing.”

In the end, Tebow had the potential to connect with nearly 20,000 people, as he was invited to speak at four worship services throughout the weekend. The church hopes that his talks served as an outreach to non-Christians in the community.

Tebow’s appearance were conducted in an interview format, as Kevin Oder, Canyon Ridge’s senior pastor, asked the player questions about a variety of subjects. The format was specifically chosen, according to Oder, to allow for the audience to learn a structured set of information about one of football’s biggest names.

Below, watch Tebow teach Oder and congregants his famous prayer stance (i.e. “Tebowing”):

“He gets really fired up when he preaches, just like he does on the football field,” Oder explained. “I could just hand him the ball and let him run, but I think in an interview format we‘ll be able to get to understand him more as a person and he’ll say a few things that he might not necessarily say when he’s preaching.”

Fierce struggle underway to save life of Iranian Christian

Mark Levin – Where’s Obama And The Media On Iranian Pastor Being Put To Death For Apostasy

Mark Levin – Where’s Obama And The Media On Iranian Pastor Being Put To Death For Apostasy.

Sources in Iran have reported to the ACLJ that an execution order for Christian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani may have been issued.

Call for Pastor Youcef's Immediate ReleasePastor Youcef’s situation – an innocent man convicted and sentenced to death for becoming a Christian – has not been this dire since we first brought his case to your attention last year.

It is absolutely critical that we take action now to defend this innocent man’s life.

Sign the Petition to Free Christian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani now, before it is too late.

Pastor Youcef has been illegally imprisoned and separated from his wife and two boys since 2009; and each time the Iranian regime has demanded that he recant his Christian faith, he has responded, “I cannot.”

Now, this Christian Pastor’s life literally hangs in the balance.

Congress is taking action, considering a resolution condemning Iran’s human rights violations and calling for Pastor Youcef’s release. The ACLJ is urging every Member of Congress to support this resolution.

We are also taking his case to the United Nations and urging the international media to tell Pastor Youcef’s story.

It is unclear whether Pastor Youcef would have any appeal from an execution order, but we know the Iranian regime has withheld his execution thus far because of international pressure.

We must keep up the pressure on Iran. As Pastor Youcef stands up for his faith in the face of imminent death, take a stand for him today. Take action.

Thank you for joining with the ACLJ in calling for Pastor Youcef’s immediate release.

Jordan Sekulow
ACLJ Executive Director

P.S. We must take action today to save Pastor Youcef’s life before it is too late. Please sign the petition, forward this message, and share it on Facebook by using the “Like” buttons in this email.
