Epoxy Resin – A Guide

Epoxy resin is the collective family of non-toxic organic compound or dried polymer materials of mixed structural elements. Epoxy resin, also called polyurethane, is a group of polymer resins and polymer groups that contain oxygen groups. The oxygen in epoxy resin polymers is reacting with other substances present in the resin in order to create a color change.

There are three types of epoxy resin chemical reactions which can cause toxic effects. The first type is known as the reactivity reaction. In this chemical reaction, epoxy resin bonding with certain chemicals produces toxic hydroxyl radicals (OH). The second is known as the thermo-reactivity reaction, in which the epoxy resin and certain metals are combined. The last is called the thermo-physical reaction, which is similar to the physical reaction which takes place in the reaction between two substances when heated. These are the three major epoxy resin chemical reactions that can result in hazardous chemical reactions and effects.

Two other types of epoxy resin products include polyester resins and fiberglass resins. These two products have different ways of curing and the way they cure is also different. For instance, polyester resins must undergo a heat-treatment to improve their electrical insulation properties and make them suitable for use as electrical insulators. Fiberglass and epoxy composite resin materials, on the other hand, must undergo certain types of chemical treatments before manufacturing them to make them suitable as roofing and flooring materials.
